MANY ROADS TO FREEDOM: |
16. KELSEY'S LANDING Hanford's, Kelsey's and other landings, on the lower shore of the Genesee River, were places where escaping slaves could catch a boat to Canada on the last leg of the Underground Railroad. Although the landings were the sites of wharves and small warehouses, they were relatively removed from the major thoroughfares of Rochester where a fugitive might be easily spotted. The former landings remain obscure today. The historical marker for Kelsey's Landing is located in Maplewood Park at the corner of Lake and Driving Park Avenues, at the west end of the bridge.
