MANY ROADS TO FREEDOM: |
19. CAMP HILLHOUSE Camp Hillhouse was named after Thomas Hillhouse, New York State Adjutant General. It was located on the site of the Monroe County fairgrounds about 1/4 mile south of Mount Hope Cemetery. West Henrietta Road was its eastern boundary. The western boundary was Stanford Road. The United
States government rented the land and made a major investment in the camp
by creating quarters for 1,000 soldiers, plus a kitchen, dining halls,
hospital facilities, stables, officers' quarters, etc. Local cavalry units
were among the first to train here. |
