MANY ROADS TO FREEDOM:
ABOLITIONIST AND CIVIL WAR SITES IN ROCHESTER

11. ST. MARY'S HOSPITAL

An 1890 view of St. Mary's Hospital. The hospital was begun by the Sisters of Charity in 1857. This building, at Bull's Head Corners (West Avenue and Genesee Street), opened in 1865. The Lombard-Romanesque style hospital was designed by Andrew Jackson Warner. It was later replaced by newer buildings. A merger with Park Ridge Hospital in 1998 turned St. Mary's from a full-service hospital to a facility focused on out-patient services as part of the Unity Health System.

This hospital was one of two institutions to which local wounded Civil War soldiers were brought.
