Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888)
and James Merritt Ives (1824-1895) were partners in the firm of Currier
and Ives, the most important 19th-century lithographic company in America.
Currier & Ives were pioneers in the large-scale production of lithographs.
In the early 19th century lithographs began to replace engravings, which
were more expensive to create. Lithographs are created using a flat
surface upon which ink is applied to a grease-treated image. This image is
then printed using a special kind of press. The Currier & Ives firm used
many images as sources for their lithographs, everything from
reproductions of famous paintings to original works created by artists who
often specialized in various types of scenes. The political cartoons you
see here were created by Louis Maurer, John Cameron and others who worked
for the firm. |
